- Title
Genome sequencing: the third generation.
- Authors
Check Hayden, Erika
- Abstract
The article discusses third-generation sequencing technology and the claim by some companies that human genomes can be sequenced in about three minutes or sold at a cost of $5000. Topics include a meeting in Marco Island, Florida of researchers reviewing the data supporting the claims of the companies including Complete Genomics in California, comments from Complete Genomics’ chief executive, Clifford Reid, and a brief overview of how Complete is able to speed up the process of sequencing human genomes. Also discussed is third-generation sequencing being performed by Pacific Biosciences using single-molecule technology with DNA polymerase, which is the enzyme that cells use to assemble DNA strands.
