- Abstract
The article discusses an international treaty whose aim is to tackle the problem of ozone-destroying substances and well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Topics include an overview of the Montreal Protocol which bans the use and manufacture of products containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). CFCs were widely used in refrigerants, propellants, and solvents. Chemical manufacturers have replaced CFCs and HCFCs with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). HFCs are not affected by the Montreal Protocol because they don't affect the stratospheric ozone layer, though they are covered under the Kyoto Protocol. Also discussed is why Montreal delegates have decided to phase out the use of HFCs and how a phase out benefits the emissions trading industry.
