- Abstract
Among the numerous spiritual communities that settled in Pomerania and in the principality of Rügen, which was independent until 1325, the Cistercian Order played a prominent role. Not only do the Cistercians account for a large part of the preserved written and architectural remains of medieval monastic life, but the Cistercian monasteries are among the more intensively researched institutes in Pomerania, whose high historical research potential is, however, far from exhausted. In addition to historical studies on the various aspects of the Pomeranian Cistercians, several art historical studies on the architecture of the abbeys as well as numerous archaeological research projects have been carried out in recent years, which have made it possible to reconstruct the layout and construction of the Pomeranian monasteries, which were largely destroyed after the Reformation, and to make further statements on, among other things, burial culture, economic practices and everyday life of the Cistercians. This article presents an overview of the individual Pomeranian monasteries that are being researched as part of the ongoing research and publication project "Klosterregister und Klosterbuch für Pommern" (Monastery Register and Monastery Catalog for Pomerania) at the Department of Regional History at Kiel University.
