- Abstract
One of the foremost important oral hygiene aids to maintain good oral health is toothbrush. They are used to prevent plaque accumulation which may lead to severe periodontal diseases, as well as dental caries. Toothbrush contamination is a serious issue which is neglected by even the practitioners. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding toothbrush disinfection among dental students. A cross sectional study was conducted using a 17 item pre-tested questionnaire among 202 dental students, both undergraduates and postgraduates from various dental colleges of Chennai. The statistics were computed with the SPSS version 23.0 software. Chi square test, Spearman's correlation test was used for assessment. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. About 90.5% students including both the undergraduates and postgraduates had knowledge about toothbrush contamination and disinfection. There was a statistically significant difference regarding the relation between toothbrush contamination and systemic diseases (P value = 0.04). The difference was found to be statistically significant (P = 0.04) regarding sharing of toothbrush. Only 12.8% of the total participants practised toothbrush disinfection. There was a statistically significant difference in the perception about toothbrush contamination and disinfection among the participants that might be attributed to their higher academic knowledge and clinical experience.
