- Abstract
The study "Poor Nobility in Prussia" by Chelion Begass examines the phenomenon of impoverished nobility in Prussia between 1770 and 1830. The author shows that this situation was a central argument for nobility reforms and paints a detailed picture of the distressed situation of many nobles. The study emphasizes that the majority of Prussian nobility already possessed impoverished estates in the 17th and 18th centuries. The article describes the precarious situation of the poor nobility in the 19th century, after many noble landowners were no longer able to pay their debts. Many nobles relied on subordinate positions in the civil service and were dependent on the support of the king.
