- Abstract
An animal hoarder is defined as someone who has accumulated a large number of animals and who: fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, and veterinary care; fails to act on the deteriorating condition of the animals (including disease, starvation or death), and the environment (severe overcrowding, extremely unsanitary conditions); and often, is unaware of the negative effects of the collection on the own and family members health and well-being. Animal hoarding has been gaining more attention from researchers in various areas of study, including sociological, psychological, and veterinary fields. In order to help compulsive hoarders and their animal victims, increased collaboration among various agencies including animal protection agencies, veterinarians, and social and health services, would allow earlier intervention and prevention of that disorder.
