- Abstract
The three most important aspects in cancer treatment are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The use of ionizing radiation for cancer treatment reported an extraordinary development during the past years, and the use of medical imaging has been a very important tool in helping to achieve this change. CT remains the only 3D imaging modality used for dose calculation. There are also used secondarily in the treatment planning process newer modalities, such as MRI and PET. Because of its better tissue contrast and resolution than CT, the MRI improves tumor definition compared with CT planning alone. Image registration is a crucial step for image analysis in which valuable information is conveyed in more than one image. Therefore, the fusion of the useful information from two or more images is very important. The CT-MRI fusion will provide optimal tumor targeting information and will increase accuracy in treatment planning of brain tumor irradiation.
