- Abstract
The present study had as main objective to classify the intensity of the coastal erosion in the south coast of João Pessoa, Paraíba, from the field identification of the presence or not presence of eleven geoindicators described by Souza et al (2005); Souza (2009); Martins (2015); Martins et al. (2016). The use of geoindicators is an alternative to carry out assessments of the risk potential of natural disasters in coastal areas. Therefore, they can be used to provide indications of hazards to which it is subject. In the study area the geoindicators were divided in four intensity patterns, being null (without geoindicators), low (geoindicators that alter the landscape a little), moderate (that significantly altered the landscape) and high (that significantly altered the landscape and with anthropogenic alterations). The study area have approximately 12km of the coastline of the João Pessoa city (PB), distributed along seven beaches (South part of Cabo Branco beach, Ponta do Seixas beach, Penha, Arraial, Jacarapé, Sol and Barra de Gramame Norte). All high erosion geoindicators were identified in the study area, such as Ponta do Seixas, Ponta do Cabo Branco and Jacarapé beaches. The methodology used, adapted to the area in question, proved to be satisfactory in achieving the proposed objectives, providing data of visual impacts of coastal erosion. The results of this study can serve like a subsidy to the coastal management of the coast of the studied area, as well as other areas of the coast of Paraíba.
