- Abstract
Predicting the Artisanal Fishers' Local Knowledge About Target-Species in Brazil The main goal of our research was to assess the relationship of socioeconomic and fishing factors on fisher's knowledge about fish species linked to inland fisheries of the Parnaíba River. We analysed the influence of a key set of variables on both richness and composition of fish species related to artisanal fisheries, including fisher age and gender, complementary economic activities to fisheries (CEAF), fisher experience, fishing target shift and capture techniques. These fishers are registered in the General Record of the Fishing Activity (see Brazil Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry Normative Ruling N° 06-2012) and are organized in local associations: Piauí State's Fishers Federation (Z-3 Colony), or the Union of Fishermen and Fisherwomen of Amarante and Francisco Ayres of Piauí State and São Francisco do Maranhão. Furthermore, fishers frequently use bait acquired from their own agricultural produce (e.g., corn cobs), illustrating the importance of agriculture in the increase of the fishery production and, consequently, for the income of the fishers.
