- Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can cause malignant or benign lesions. The HPV vaccines are effective in preventing the infection by this agent, presenting effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge about the HPV vaccine and the factors associated with vaccination avoidance or non-adherence among students aged 9 to 14 years. A cross sectional study with representative sample of 439 interviewees, from the public and private schools of Ipatinga - MG. The majority (57.2%) reported knowing what HPV is, and of these, 78.5% stated that HPV is a viral disease. Non-adherence (23.7%) has been attributed to the lack of knowledge about the campaign (65.4%). The avoidance rate was 35.1%, justified by their lack of knowledge (61%), followed by fear of possible side effects (12.7%). Factors associated with adherence to HPV vaccination were younger age, male gender, evangelical religion and not knowledge about HPV. Therefore, there is a clear need for the development of strategies aimed at disseminating information about HPV and its vaccine.
