- Abstract
The common cold is an infectious, self-limiting disease that can be caused by several infectious agents, such as rhinovirus and coronavirus, which are responsible for most of all common colds. The flu infection is an acute respiratory disease caused mainly by the influenza virus, it is more serious than the common cold. Colds and flu are the main flu syndromes that affect the human body. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and its effects can be significant in conditions where oxidative stress increases, and has a physiological antioxidant effect, protecting host cells against oxidative stress caused by infections. Scientific evidence does not establish the use of vitamin C supplementation in the prevention of flu-like syndromes, vitamin C was identified in the early 1900s and suggestions that one of its biological roles may be that of resisting infections are supported by numerous studies with animals. However, regular vitamin C supplementation resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the duration of the common cold episodes that occurred during the prophylactic supplementation period in children and adults. Regular supplementation trials have shown that vitamin C affects the duration and severity of colds without changing its incidence in the general population, and there is evidence that administering vitamin C therapeutically, starting immediately after the first symptoms, has significant treatment results flu-like syndromes.
