- Abstract
Introduction: The National Neonatal Screening Program (PNTN) aims to detect presymptomatic genetic and/or ongenital diseases in newborns in the Brazilian population, allowing early clinical intervention, also decreasing or eliminating sequelae. Objective: To assess the prevalence of diseases diagnosed through PNTN in live births from January 2014 to December 2015, in Timóteo, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Methods: Data were obtained from the Epidemiological Surveillance of the city, based on the database of the Nucleus of Actions and Research in Diagnostic Support (NUPAD). Results: For the period assessed, the total number of live births in Timóteo was 2.105, with 71.50% coverage by PNTN. The average age of the neonates was 6.2 days by the time of sample collection. The following conditions were observed: one case of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, 2 of Cystic Fibrosis, 2 of Hemoglobinopathies, 55 of Sickle cell trait, 17 of Trace of Hemoglobin C and one of Trace of Hemoglobin D. Conclusion: The present study reinforces the importance of early exams during the neonatal period, a good guidance of the pregnant women during the prenatal period, as well as continuous training of health care providers.
