- Abstract
This paper presents the emergence of German studies at the University of Strasbourg before the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität was created in 1872, after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine. Frédéric-Guillaume Bergmann (1812-1887), professor of foreign literature, had been in charge of teaching German language and literature at the Faculté des langues from 1840 to 1872. During these years, he also attempted to promote the teaching and research of comparative philology and linguistics in France, based on the German model. Unlike many other professors who left Strasbourg after the war to held positions at French universities, he chose to stay as a professor of the German university.
