- Abstract
The accuracy of radiopharmaceutical doses administered to patients is an important consideration for nuclear medicine practices. Measurement accuracy is underpinned by comparison and calibration of radionuclide dose calibrators with certified reference materials traceable to a national standard. In Australia, national standards for the activity of radionuclides are developed, maintained and disseminated by ANSTO. ANSTO developed the Australian Nuclear Medicine Traceability Program (ANMTP) in consultation with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM). Participants registered in the program receive a dose calibrator measurement assessment and a calibration if required. Assessments are performed using Australian Certified Reference Materials (ACRMs) for the most commonly used radiopharmaceuticals. Tc-99m and I-131 ACRMs were provided to ANMTP participants in 2014 and 2015 and Ga-67 was added to the program in 2015. The majority of dose calibrator measurement results agreed with the activity values of the ACRMs within the associated uncertainties, however several dose calibrators were found to be operating outside the ANSI Standard specification of ± 10% of the stated activity. The calibration factors of these dose calibrators were adjusted so that their measurements were accurately correlated with the ACRM activity and the Australian standard. National dose calibrator measurement data collected under ANMTP allows analysis and reporting of the accuracy of dose calibrators around Australia. Identification and subsequent calibration of dose calibrators operating outside of the accepted specifications can reduce the potential for misadministration, and certified traceability for dose calibrator measurements can assist nuclear medicine practices in satisfying relevant regulatory compliance obligations.
