- Abstract
This article, titled "Gestational Transient Thyrotoxicosis Can Lead to Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis," discusses a case study of a pregnant woman who experienced paralysis in her upper and lower extremities. The woman was diagnosed with hypokalemic periodic paralysis induced by gestational transient thyrotoxicosis. The article explains that gestational transient thyrotoxicosis is a common cause of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy and is related to elevated levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG). The woman was treated with propranolol and potassium supplements, and her condition improved after 7 days of hospitalization. The article emphasizes the importance of considering β-hCG-mediated hyperthyroidism in the differential diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis in early pregnancy, particularly in cases of severe morning sickness and twin pregnancies.
