Eurocommunism and the Contradictions of Superpower Détente.
- Authors
HEURTEBIZE, FRÉDÉRIC
- Abstract
The article discusses aspects of Eurocommunism and the contradictions of superpower détente. It states that détente was supposed to reduce the risks of nuclear showdown, help superpowers recoup, and foster a more predictable relationship between the Soviet Union and the U.S. It attempts to connect the parallel developments of détente and Eurocommunism. It also discusses the reasons why Eurocommunism flourished namely the relaxation of tensions between the two superpowers, and because Western European communist parties enjoyed more leeway and independence opposite Moscow.
