- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of Rastafari as a cult. It cites George Simpson who noted in 1980 the six doctrines that stand out in the Rastafari belief system including black men are reincarnations to the ancient Israelites, white is inferior to black, and Jamaica is a hopeless hell. It examines the evolution of the Rastafari movement, its emergence, and the status of Rastafari within society. The major sectors of Rastafari including the Nyahbinghi, the Bobo Dread, and the Twelve Tribes of Israel, are examined.
