- Abstract
This article discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding practices in an Italian Baby Friendly Community. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the community health services in Trieste were able to maintain their Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) standards by providing online care and support. The study found that the use of online antenatal and postnatal classes, including breastfeeding consultations, helped to counteract the effects of lockdowns and restrictions. The data collected on key BFI indicators showed that standards of care were maintained, with no significant changes in the percentage of women accessing antenatal classes or the rate of exclusive breastfeeding. The study highlights the importance of continuous breastfeeding support and access to consultation services in promoting good breastfeeding practices during the pandemic. The findings suggest that online services can be an effective strategy for delivering community health services and may be applicable in other settings.
