- Abstract
This article focuses on Sir Thomas Lawrence and Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. Sir Thomas Lawrence showed his first impressions of the Duke of Wellington in a letter dated August 7, 1812 to the painter and diarist Joseph Farington. Wellesley dislike sitting to portrait painters and he refused to Lawrence's assistant, John Simpson. Apart from his apparent belif that he was wasting his time by sitting for his portrait, he was perhaps less willing than others to take an active role in fashioning his image for posterity.
