The article examines that artist William Hogarth issued his own trade card in April 1720 as such cards were also called shop cards but at this date he did not have a shop or an established trade. Topics include reports that he learn to engrave initials and heraldic designs on cutlery and silver plates; and considered that he declared himself to become an engraver.
