- Abstract
The article describes the properties of the zirconia material Zolid Bion and the challenges in placing planned restorations in the round. The material is characterized by increased translucency in the cutting area, an average strength of 1100 MPa, and the ability to sinter small restorations in just 45 minutes. Various types of zirconia and their composition are also explained. The company Amann Girrbach has dealt with the trend of multi-generation rounds and developed the MDR-certified material Zolid Bion. In close cooperation with the long-standing cooperation partner Tosoh from Tokyo, Japan, the company Reichert • Röschmann succeeded in significantly optimizing the zirconia material Zpex Smile. By targeted changes in the composition and further powder modifications, the strength of the material could be increased to over 200 MPa, while the translucency properties remained consistent regardless of the sintering protocol. Amann Girrbach is now MDR-certified and can thus promote new developments or optimizations of zirconia blanks. Product safety is ensured through extensive testing according to applicable standards (DIN EN ISO 6872). The article describes the influencing factors on the color result of zirconia restorations. Factors such as the thickness of the crowns and the surface texture have a significant influence on the final color result. The development of color gradients is based on defined mixtures of four zirconia powder raw material base colors. The coloring components diffuse from one color layer to the adjacent layer during sintering to create a natural color gradient. The validation of the products is done through standardized test objects and standardized light sources. Zolid Bion uses the layer concept of the golden proportions to achieve a harmonious color and translucency gradient. To minimize errors in the application of zirconia, the blanks are provided with a plastic frame that allows for stress-free storage in the milling machine. The new Zolid Bion concept was presented at IDS 2023. New raw materials and applications have led to materials that have been aesthetically improved without compromising strength and safety.
