The article reports on a study by Mojca Vilfan and colleagues which demonstrated a direct fluid flow using man-made cilia. Artificial cilia were made up of chains of superparamagnetic spheres and they can be magnetized in an external magnetic field. Creating artificial cilia would mean large arrays that can be produced relatively easily. In this study, fluid flow was measured by monitoring the position of non-magnetic spheres.
