- Abstract
The article explains why Sam Hughes had a dynamic influence on Canada and why his name occurs in two of three Canadian soldier's songs entitled "D'ye Ken Sam Hughes" and "Sam Hughes' Army" which were collected from two veterans of World War I. His greatest influence was at the outbreak of World War I where, as a militia colonel, he enlisted thousand of recruits to the Canadian military and making the Valcartier Camp habitable in a matter of days. He was able to send the First Contingent of the Canadian Force to England a few weeks after war was declared.
