- Abstract
The article presents a speech by Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev delivered at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., on February 9, 2011. It addresses the connection between music and faith as experienced by past and contemporary composers and by the author. The author cites the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as music clearly dedicated to God, and that of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms as being capable of elevating a human being morally. The music of Nikolai Golovanov, of Arvo Part, and of the author are discussed.
