- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the pharmaceutical industry in India between the 1950s and 1970s. Particular focus is given to the evolution of policies regarding technology and the production of pharmaceutical drugs within India, as well as the impact of those policies on India's relationship with the Soviet Union and the Western world. The article presents a history of transnational pharmaceutical companies in India, explores the concepts of nonalignment and self-reliance as they related to the Indian government, and comments on the role played by former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, scientist J. C. Ghosh, and government official Santokh Singh Sokhey in developing the Indian government's pharmaceutical policies.
