- Abstract
The article argues that political, economic and technological factors account for the rise and fall of organization flexibility at the RCA Laboratories Division during the 1950s. Charles Mueller, a researcher at RCA, was responsible for establishing transistor pilot-production line at Harrison for the germanium alloy-junction transistors he helped develop at the division. RCA had begun commercial production of both point-contact and alloy-junction transistors in May 1953. As the division was expanding into the field of solid-state electronics, it deliberately broke down the organizational boundary between the laboratory and the factory.
