- Abstract
A 42-year-old woman experienced bilateral hearing loss and status epilepticus after taking oral metronidazole for 20 days. MRI scans revealed lesions in various parts of the brain. The woman was diagnosed with metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIE) and the medication was immediately stopped. MIE is a rare but serious adverse reaction to metronidazole, with symptoms including cerebellar involvement, seizures, and altered mental status. Most patients recover completely after discontinuing the medication. It is important to consider MIE in patients with a history of metronidazole use, especially if they have cerebellar dentate nuclei lesions.
