- Abstract
The article provides information on a yearlong professional development program funded by Michigan's state department of education which emphasized connecting students' ideas and experiences with science lessons. It discusses the objective of promoting the educational relevance of scientific activities to students' everyday life. Particular attention is given to one teacher's use of formative assessment to guide a classroom activity and discussion on renewable energy resources.
