- Abstract
The article discusses the use of a whirligig construction competition in elementary science classrooms as a way of teaching scientific inquiry and engineering design. It addresses the use of conducting student-centered experiments, teaching troubleshooting skills, and learning to improve designs. It comments on the differences between inquiry and design, as well as notes the hands-on nature of the unit.
