- Title
Inside a Killer: Immune Signals May Promote Vascular Growth.
- Abstract
The article focuses on a study in which researchers Sumati Rajagopalan and colleagues showed that natural killer cells play a part in ensuring the success of a pregnancy. It is reported that NK cell receptors bind to proteins on the surfaces of other cells. One type of NK cell receptor, called killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR)2DL4, binds to the protein human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G. By activating the receptor with an antibody, the researchers first showed that cytokine secretion could be triggered only when the antibody was soluble and not when bound to a solid surface.
