- Title
Social workers and the ethical dilemmas of community action campaigns: lessons from the Australian State of Victoria.
- Authors
Mendes, Philip
- Abstract
In recent years, Australian social workers have become increasingly involved in local community action campaigns. Many of these campaigns involve highly contentious civil disobedience actions including breaches of the law, and the involvement of children in protests and demonstrations. Yet, the existing social work code of ethics provides little or no guidance to social workers faced with such ethical dilemmas. Equally, much of the existing community development literature is less than helpful. This article explores a number of case studies from the Australian experience which illustrate the ethical dilemmas involved, and makes suggestions as to how professional Codes of Ethics could incorporate guidelines relevant to community development activism.
