- Abstract
With the increasing number of different drug combinations, drug interactions have become a growing medical problem. Undesirable drug interactions can lead to serious health issues, manifesting in various changes in the body. In this study, we evaluated the risk of drug interactions in patients over 65 years of age who were dispensed medications in a monitored public pharmacy during 2021 and who took at least one antihypertensive drug. In a group of 1724 patients (66.42 % women), we identified 5205 dispenstations which included a total of 11,157 drugs. The number of drugs per dispenstation was 1 - 13 (median = 3). More than 5 types of drugs were dispensed in 261 dispenstations, and drug interaction occurred in 205 (78.54 %) cases, with a total of 543 drug interactions, of which 398 (73.30 %) were interactions with drugs from the ATC group C. Most drug interactions (34.81 %) were of the third degree (out of 6) of clinical severity, and the most severe interactions (4th - 6th degree) were 12.51 %. More than half of the patients made only one visit to the pharmacy, and only a quarter of the patients made more than three visits during the year. Our findings suggest that the possibility of identifying the risk of drug interactions during drug dispensing is real, but due to the scope of providers of pharmacy care and the resulting fluctuation of patients, this possibility is significantly limited. Therefore, it is essential to implement tools that allow prescribing physicians and dispensing pharmacists access to a complete medication history of the patient.
