- Abstract
This paper introduces the research collaboration between the Snoezelen room in Zama School for Children with Disabilities at Kanagawa Prefectural and the Faculty of Human Life Design, Toyo University, which started in January 2018. In recent years, the overscale of special support schools due to the severity and duplication of disabilities, diversification, and an increase in the number of students has become an issue. Students with intellectual disabilities have started to enroll in prefectural high schools designated as inclusive schools. With the establishment of a special support school nearby, the inclusive school also has a shared learning room that can meet various needs, part of which is a Snoezelen room, which was opened in April 2017. It is often used by students with physical and intellectual disabilities. While many people affirm that Snoezelen is highly effective for relaxation, active movement, and communication of children with severe multiple disabilities, the evidence for the effectiveness of the environment is a challenge. In this study, we will introduce the examples of Snoezelen use at our school and examine its effect from the record table of students, changes in actual conditions, and assessments and extract future issues.
