- Abstract
The first results of the isotopic composition of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in the dentin of teeth from five human individuals are exposed and discussed in this paper. They were found in funerary contexts of the archaeological sites Bajo Los Cardones (n=2), El Remate (n=1) and Finca Cruz (n=2), all of them located along the Amaicha stream, western slope of Cumbres Calchaquíes - Sierras del Aconquija (Tucumán, Argentina). In turn, in order to build models for paleodietary inference, isotopic analyzes were carried out on specimens of archaeological fauna (Lama glama) and current fauna (Lama guanicoe), as well as on cultivated vegetables for human consumption (Zea mays and Chenopodium quinoa), wild (Geoffroea decorticans, Prosopis nigra and Prosopis alba) and pastures with forage potential. There was little variation in the human diet over time, with corn always predominating as the basic food. These results indicate the possible consolidation of corn as a base food around 1500 years BP in the southern mesothermal valleys of the Argentine Northwest.
