- Abstract
The text deals with the importance of art education and the necessity to consider artworks in their context. Using the painting "The Conversion of Paul" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, it is illustrated how the initial subjective impression of a work does not always correspond to its actual meaning. The changes in art are closely linked to developments in the sciences. The question is raised as to why there is not a call against every form of war. Images can also communicate meanings that are not written in texts. The story of Lucretia is mentioned as an example of the semantic structure of written sources. The text discusses the reception of Rembrandt's paintings in a culture where rape was told and remembered as a story of women.
