The German Roots of Nineteenth-Century American Theology.
- Authors
Raedel, Christoph
- Abstract
The present work investigates the influence of liberal, denominational and mediation theologies on reformed theologians in the United States in the 19th century. By way of example it is demonstrated how these influences became effective in the doctrinal method and the reconciliation theology of the two reformed American theologians Emanuel Vogel Gerhard and Charles Hodge. The study proves that Gerhard was a representative of mediation theology seeking independent synthesis and Hodge rather an eclectic thinker seeking close proximity to reformed orthodoxy. This book represents a significant contribution to the study of the history of theology in the nineteenth century.
