- Abstract
Given the increasing number of middle-aged individuals in the population, and the loss of physical abilities due to the aging process, adopting regular physical exercise can be an important ally in the deceleration of healthrelated losses and quality of life of these subjects. The aim of the study was to analyze the chronic effects of a combined physical exercise program on health-related fitness in middle-aged adults. The sample consisted of 10 women aged between 40 and 60 years. It was an intervention study by means of a physical exercise program, divided in each session into aerobic, resistance and stretching activities, during 8 weeks. Before and after the intervention, the participants of the study performed the measurement of body mass index (BMI), exercise test, lower limb strength test (LMW) and upper limbs (LMW), and flexibility test. The results showed that the participants presented statistically significant improvements for both MMSS strength (p=0008) and MMII strength (p=0.04). It was also verified that the volunteers presented improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and flexibility, however, these results did not show significant statistical differences. It was concluded, therefore, that in general the results of the intervention were satisfactory, corroborating the findings in the scientific literature that proclaim about the relevance of the incorporation of a well-oriented physical exercise program in the general population.
