- Title
Governing the Divorcée: Gender and Sexuality in State-Mandated Parenting Classes.
- Authors
CHARANIA, MOON; SIMONDS, WENDY
- Abstract
The article discusses state-mandated parenting classes for divorcing couples. Foucauldian analysis of the governmentality and biopolitics of these classes is offered and the authors argue that these parenting seminars deploy efforts to legitimize the normativity of heterosexual marriage. Additional topics include the notion that children of divorcing parents are at risk, the promotion of neoliberal concepts of self-improvement and empowerment, and the extension of state power.
