- Abstract
In March 1939, the president of the French republic Albert Lebrun visited London amid rising tensions in Europe and a re-assessment of France and Britain's passive attitudes towards Germany. Whilst Lebrun fulfilled his presidential duties, attending receptions and inaugurations and visiting various institutions, discussions with his British counterparts about the international situation were left to the minister of Foreign Affairs, Georges Bonnet. Lebrun's visit drew the media's attention to French culture in London. The inauguration of the new buildings of the French cultural institute by Lebrun and the Princess Royal received wide coverage in the press. In 1939, French cultural action abroad followed on from the expansionist cultural policy led by the Popular Front. Lebrun's visit provides an insight into French culture in London at the time. It provoked discussions amongst British journalists and intellectuals about France's cultural policy in Britain, and, by extension, an assessment of Britain's cultural presence in the world.
