- Abstract
AIM: Purpose of this clinical course is to describe the close relationship of ophthalmology and other medical specialties through reports and presentations of common diseases involving the eyes either as initial manifestation or later in their course highlighting the need of obtaining a detailed ocular history and performing a thorough ophthalmic examination where needed. MATERIAL - METHOD: The eyes may be affected in a serious number of systemic diseases. Problems in the eye may be a fi rst presentation of the systemic disease or patients with known systemic problems may need to have their eyes specifi cally checked for complications. Awareness of these associations is the fi rst step in diagnosis and management of these often complex patients. RESULTS: The authors underline in their presentations how ophthalmology is the practice of medicine and that -maybe more than any other specialty- is related to neurology, internal medicine, rheumatology pharmacology and other scientifi c modalities. In particular, the presenters explain how common systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, collagen issue disorders, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, thyroid dysfunction and associated medication intake may manifest through ophthalmic symptoms or signs and summarize useful guidelines about when and how often a practitioner should order an ophthalmic examination on these patients. CONCLUSIONS: Numerous conditions have ophthalmic symptoms and signs associated with them. Awareness of these may act as a useful adjunct that will lead to a timely and accurate diagnosis as well as selection of the right treatment option.
