- Abstract
INTRODUCTION Terrorism as a phenomenon of weak fraction political struggle has undergone changes as a reaction to the changes in the post Cold War geo-political environment. The contemporary terrorism analysts are noting the modern terrorist striving to infl ict more casualties in order to attract the media and international community attention, thus trying to achieve their set goal. Medical community has to be prepared to manage mass casualty terrorist acts. This imperative is even more valid, if the expressed by the terrorist willingness to purchase or acquire weapons of mass destruction is considered as a real threat. Unfortunately, WMD were used by terrorist in several acts, thus transforming their words in an imminent threat. THE AIM of this publication is to present the structures, equipment and organization, established in Military Medical Academy, Sofi a, for assuring adequate and effi cient medical support to mass casualty event due to terrorist act. MATERIALS AND METHODS By means of the descriptive and comparative methods the established structures and Standard Operating Procedures, medical and technical equipment are presented in comparison with the healthcare system challenges related to the contemporary terrorism. RESULTS Based on the obtain results the author concludes that despite the fact that terrorist act, as other disasters is unpredictable, regarding time of occurrence and consequences severity, the Military Medical Academy is maintaining high level preparedness and readiness for mass casualty event medical management and support even if WMD are used.
