- Abstract
BACKGROUND: The intestines and epitelial tumors are both important reasons of morbidity and mortality in the whole world. While tumors are seen rarely on small intestines, they are commonly seen on the large inestines. Colon is a bigger source for primary noroplasm than any other organs including rectum. 98% of large intestine cancers are adenocarsinomes. Colon cansers are commonly seen , because almost all of the colorectal carcinomes are sourced from an adenomatous polip base. Colorectal carsinomes are 3rd in the world in both incidence and mortality. Also they make the 15% of all the cancer related deaths.A cancer as common as colon cancer is easily early diagnosed and the prognosis of the illness can be cured. Considiring our countries sources and capabilities the most recommended method as a screening method is Fecal Occult Blood Test which should be done in every 2 years , and colonoscopy which should be done in every 10 years. The main purpose of our work is to find out how much do people know about this cancer and it‟s screening methods. And also to find out how much do the ones who know use what they know. This way the societys awareness about colon cancer and it‟s screening methods will be analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey will be done with the people who apply to GATA between 03.01.13 and 15.03.13. all the data gained from the survey will be recorded. Its planned to asses approximatelly 1300 peoples data. There will not be an other work(interwiew of the sick or risky people, asking for tests, any other procedure) related to this study other than the survey. RESULTS: SPSS 15.0 is used in our study. Chi-square test was applied to awarness of colon canser according to educaiton level. There wasn‟t any meaningfull differance between illeterate and elementary and high school graduates but there was some exclusive change when university graduates were added. When frequency was taken with 50 year above patients according to their scanning conditions, it was seen that %79,4 of them never did. Also %56,2 of the patients don‟t know about colon canser scanning methods. %50 of the 50 year above patients who know aboout the scanning methods can‟t answer to why they don‟t use these methods, %10 haven‟t done scanning because no one told them to do. It was observed that %28 of the patients who know about the scanning methods learned them from medical employes, %22,2 of them learned from an other patient, %19 from TV and internet. It was sen that %70 of patients whom were scanned had normal results; %20 of them had polyps and tumors. DISCUSSION: It was seen in our study that colon canser which is third between other cancers seen in society according to morbidity and incidance is either known very poorly or not known at all. As it is in all other cancer types early diagnose is important in colon cancer. Our purpose is to notify the people and decrease the morbidity and mortality of colon canser.
