- Title
Echoing Narcissus in Alberti's Della Pittura.
- Authors
BASKINS, CRISTELLE L.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the depiction of mythological figure Narcissus in the painting "Della Pittura," by Leon Battista Alberti. When he created the painting, he also developed a founding myth depicting Narcissus as the artist behind the painting. Aside from this depiction, Narcissus has become the exemplum of painting a figure of invention, as well as a representation of tensions in the vision of Alberti concerning the social position and function of the artist/author. One of the factors that encourage a reassessment of the idiosyncratic and willful quality of Narcissus was the mitigation of Alberti's forefathers against the pictorial function of Narcissus.
