- Abstract
The article provides information about the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Rockville, Maryland. In 1911, the ATCC was organized by the Society of American Bacteriologists as "A Bacteriological Collection and Bureau for the Distribution of Bacterial Cultures" at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It was designed to collect type cultures in bacteriology and descriptions of new species were based on the study of a number of strains. The center maintains for posterity living collections of over 11,000 strains representing bacteria, animal cell lines and protozoa.
