- Abstract
The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to create a new controlled language: Español Técnico Simplificado (ETS), i.e. Simplified Technical Spanish. Based on the technical specification of Simplified Technical English (STE - officially known as ASD-STE100), ETS is a metalinguistic document providing a technical writer or technical translator some specific rules to write, or to translate, a technical document. The implementation strategy leads to a preliminary study of some specific controlled languages similar to STE, i.e. Français Rationalisé and Simplified Technical Spanish. Through the corpus-based approach, given by an ad-hoc corpus specifically created and queried, the exploration of the new controlled language is provided by authentic and real data. The results show a linguistic (controlled) method necessary to produce an unambiguous technical document. The ETS system relies on the concept that readability and comprehensibility are necessary conditions to be fulfilled by the controlled text. Through its structure, the ETS document provides all the necessary tools to make that text unambiguous. Therefore, the ETS structure is divided into two parts: one part concerns syntactical and stylistic rules, and one part concerns a dictionary including a limited number of selected lemmas. The project as a whole is intended to develop a new Spanish-based controlled language that introduces a completely new strategy of writing and translation.
