- Abstract
The book "The Foundations of Gentry Life. The Multons of Frampton and Their World 1270–1370" by Peter Coss examines the social and cultural basis of the English gentry. The author focuses on the Multons of Frampton, a wealthy family in Lincolnshire, and analyzes their archival records and account books. It becomes apparent that the English gentry was characterized by social mobility and adaptability, as well as cultural forms of social superiority. The Multons had several estates in Lincolnshire, and their main residence, Frampton Hall, represented the noble status of the family. The Multons' social sphere of action was primarily local, but they also had contacts with urban elites in nearby towns such as Boston. The book provides insight into the cultural horizon of the English gentry, although a comparative perspective with other countries is lacking.
