- Abstract
The study "Flood prevention in the Roman Empire" by Jasmin Hettinger examines the handling of floods in the Roman imperial era. The author uses the concept of "environmental coherence" to incorporate local archaeological and geoscientific findings. She shows that ancient societies took measures to prepare for floods and mitigate their negative effects. The study analyzes ancient discourses on floods, religious interpretations, and ancient knowledge. It also examines the legal and technical handling of floods in different regions of the Roman Empire. The results show that the ancient relationship with the hydrological environment was a daily phenomenon. The study provides a comprehensive and well-researched analysis of the ancient human-environment relationship.
