- Abstract
The book "Handbook of Ancient Afro-Eurasian Economies. Vol. 2: Local, Regional, and Imperial Economies" by Sitta von Reden deals with the exchange and interrelationships of various economies, institutions, and actors in the Hellenistic-Roman East, ancient Near, Central, and Far East Asia, as well as parts of Africa. The concept of "glocalization" is used to describe the interlocking of these economic systems. The book contains case studies, including one on Palmyra, which examines the city's integration into local, regional, and global institutions and networks. Various aspects of ancient economy, such as actors, instruments, and processes, are also analyzed. However, the use of New Institutional Economics and rational choice theory for categorizing institutions is critically questioned.
