- Abstract
To estimate the prevalence of gestational syphilis in women attended at a maternity hospital in Serra Catarinense and to understand the sociodemographic, behavioral, use of services and outcome of newborns of pregnant women with syphilis. Retrospective quantitative study, based on medical records from 2015 to 2018. Of the 11,720 medical records analyzed, 515 were of pregnant women admitted during labor with a positive test for syphilis. A prevalence of gestational syphilis was 4.4%. Pregnant women were between 20-29 years old (56.7%), white (69.3%), single (54.0%), with no paid work (69.1%) and low education level (49.3%). There was wide coverage of prenatal care (93.6%) and early diagnosis (41.6%). However, the treatment was considered inadequate in 78.3% of the pregnant women and their partners and 6.4% of the newborns were born with active syphilis. It is concluded that there is high prevalence of gestational syphilis in referred maternity, related to lack of treatment for pregnant women and partners.
