- Abstract
The content and vertical distribution of the content of teaching the school subject Croatian language in primary education (from the first to the fourth form of primary school - ISCED 1) in the Republic of Croatia has been scheduled by the Curriculum and Syllabus (Cro. Nastavni plan i program za osnovnu školu) (MZOŠ, 2006). The content relating to the parts of speech encompasses the study of nouns, verbs and adjectives and it should be supplemented with teaching about adverbs in order to structure a sentence as a grammatical unit in accordance with the requirements of the language system. Pupils should be taught about the parts of speech in order to be able to structure sentence elements correctly. The research has been conducted on the sample of teacher mentors and advisors in the Republic of Croatia (N=387). The research results have shown that statistically significantly more teachers believe that pupils acquire sufficient knowledge for a smooth transition into the fifth form. However, almost one third of the teachers from the sample disagree with this statement. Statistically, significantly greater number of teachers believe that pupils in primary education should be offered more content in the field of language (for the school subject Croatian language) than they have been offered at present. In this paper the methodological approach in determining the teaching content has been described.
